Heterogeneous clustering algorithm of potential game underwater sensor networks based on ocean current model

Abstract

In underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN) , uneven energy consumption and energy hotspot issues significantly reduce network efficiency and lifespan. To tackle these challenges, this paper proposes a clustering-based routing algorithm that incorporates ocean current models and potential game theory. The algorithm begins by selecting a cluster head through a competition time-based method, which factors in residual energy and node density to determine broadcast timing. A competition radius function is also defined to ensure smaller cluster sizes closer to the base station. Subsequently, a node clustering model based on potential games is constructed, achieving optimal cluster partitioning upon reaching Nash equilibrium, thus completing the node clustering process. For inter-cluster data transmission, a depth- and energy-based inter-cluster routing mechanism is employed, where the forwarding probability of each neighboring cluster head depends on its depth and residual energy, enabling the selection of the optimal transmission route. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm successfully mitigates uneven energy consumption and energy hotspot issues, extending network lifetime by 69%, 52%, 45%, and 29% compared to LEACH, EEUC, UCUBG, and IMCMR-UWSN algorithms, respectively, while also increasing network throughput. This study provides fresh insights and methods for designing and optimizing UWSN.
