Multi-modal pedestrian crossing intention prediction model based on pre-normalization transformer

Abstract

Predicting pedestrians' crossing intentions is one of the crucial aspects of pedestrian-vehicle interaction in autonomous driving systems, aimed at anticipating the crossing behavior of pedestrians on both sides of the road for making early decisions on deceleration or avoidance. To enhance the accuracy of identifying pedestrians' crossing intentions, this paper proposes a pedestrian crossing intention prediction model inspired by the pre-normalization attention mechanism, which extracts and complementarily fuses different modal features of pedestrians. The model employs a Uni-modal Feature Enhancement (UFE) module to extract key features from single modalities, followed by a Multi-modal Feature Interaction (MFI) module to fuse features between different modalities. The experimental results show that the model achieves an accuracy rate of 91% on both the PIE and JAAD datasets. Additionally, extensive ablation experiments on different modal information fusion strategies prove the model's effectiveness, providing more accurate pedestrian crossing intention predictions for autonomous driving systems.
