Hardware design of discrete Gaussian sampler based on cumulative distribution table

Abstract

Lattice-based cryptography has gained widespread recognition as a powerful method for resisting quantum computing attacks and has become a key focus in post-quantum cryptography research. The discrete Gaussian sampler is used to introduce noise, playing a crucial role in ensuring the security of cryptographic systems. This paper proposed a novel circuit architecture for discrete Gaussian sampling based on the cumulative distribution table (CDT) approach, designed for noise generation accelerator. By employing a pipelined architecture, this design enabled the generation of one sample per clock cycle, improving the sampling efficiency of the Gaussian sampler. This ensures constant-time operation, making it resilient against side-channel attacks. Furthermore, with a storage and access pattern specifically designed for the CDT, this design supports both compile-time and run-time configurability while maintaining a small area overhead, which significantly enhances the flexibility of the Gaussian sampler. The design not only achieves high sampling and area efficiency but also resists side-channel attacks and supports high-level configurability. The implementation results on FPGA indicate that, compared to the most advanced run-time reconfigurable design, this architecture achieved a 4.86× to 14.30× improvement in area-time product , demonstrating significant advantages in configurability and performance. This work contributes to the development of more advanced hardware accelerators for encryption and decryption.
