Multi-stage cross-domain image retrieval method based on hand-drawn sketches

Abstract

To address the challenges in sketch-based image retrieval tasks, where the lack of texture and color details in sketches makes cross-modal feature alignment difficult, and where information loss during cross-domain transformation affects retrieval accuracy, this paper proposed a multi-stage cross-domain image retrieval method based on hand-drawn sketches(MSCD) . The method is divided into three stages. First, the method used a generative model to transform hand-drawn sketches into natural images, supplementing visual detail features and reducing the stylistic differences between sketches and natural images. Second, the method designed a multi-branch feature extraction network to comprehensively capture structural and semantic information from sketches, generated images, and real natural images. Finally, a similarity-weighted fusion strategy was used to integrate the complementary information from sketches and generated images, enhancing the accuracy and diversity of the final retrieval results. Extensive experiments on two public datasets, Sketchy Ext and TU-Berlin Ext, demonstrate that MSCD achieves significant improvements in mAP and Prec@100 over existing advanced methods, validating the effectiveness of MSCD in sketch retrieval tasks.
