Memory management optimization for remote swap system based on dynamic page mapping

Abstract

Remote swap system leverages the kernel’s page swap mechanism to transparently utilize remote memory, serving as a common approach for constructing disaggregated memory architecture. However, existing systems typically pre-allocate the entire capacity of remote memory when creating a remote swap partition, resulting in internal fragmentation and reduced memory utilization. To address this issue, this paper proposed a novel remote memory management method, which dynamically mapped remote pages to actively used swap entries in system, thereby reducing unnecessary memory consumption. This method introduced an efficient inter-node memory allocation and reclamation mechanism, supporting fine-grained memory management and ensuring isolation of memory access across compute nodes. Experimental results demonstrate that this method can improve the memory utilization of remote swap partitions by 5.2% to 89.1% in various scenarios, with only minimal additional overhead. Therefore, this method can effectively enhance the memory management efficiency of remote swap system.
