Survey of Chinese toxic text detection in social media contexts

Abstract

With the rapid development of social media, a large volume of toxic content containing discrimination, abuse, and hate speech has emerged online, posing serious threats to the information environment and social stability. This survey investigated the current status and technical advances in Chinese toxic text detection. It provided a comprehensive review of task definitions, evaluation metrics, dataset resources, modeling approaches, typical applications, and major challenges. The study focused on rule-based methods, feature engineering, deep learning, and pretrained language models, and further discussed advanced directions such as multi-task learning, cross-lingual transfer, and large model distillation. By comparing the perfor-mance and applicability of different techniques, it summarized key obstacles in data scarcity, implicit expressions, model bias, and multimodal modeling, and outlined potential research directions. This review offered theoretical insights and technical refe-rences for the standardization and practical implementation of toxic text detection in Chinese contexts.
