Adaptive dual-mode routing protocol for UAV-assisted vehicular Ad hoc networks

Abstract

To address the challenges of dynamic topology and uneven node distribution in UAV-assisted vehicular ad hoc networks(VANETs) , an adaptive dual-mode routing protocol(ADMR) is proposed to ensure end-to-end reliable transmission in scenarios with limited infrastructure coverage. The proposed ADMR protocol incorporates an enhanced density-based clustering method with noise application(DBSCAN) for real-time clustering of vehicular nodes. The ADMR protocol operates in two modes: (1) when the source and destination nodes belong to the same cluster, data packets are forwarded among vehicular nodes without considering UAVs or roadside units(RSUs) as the next hop; (2) when the source and destination nodes are in different clusters, UAVs or RSUs are prioritized as relays for forwarding data packets. The simulation comparison with existing protocols SZLS-GPSR, AFR-OLSR, and QL-OLSR shows that the ADMR protocol achieves a packet delivery ratio(PDR) of 94.85% under the scenario with 50 vehicle nodes moving at 8 meters per second, outperforming the three aforementioned protocols by 8.26%, 9.86% and 4.55%. Experimental validation confirms that the proposed ADMR protocol significantly improves the PDR, particularly in highly dynamic and large-scale network environments.
