Chinese zero-shot stance detection based on glyph

Abstract

Zero-Shot Stance Detection (ZSSD) aims to identify the attitude expressed in a given text toward an unseen target. Existing ZSSD methods usually follow approaches originally developed for English datasets and directly apply them to Chinese datasets. This practice ignores cross-linguistic differences and the pictographic nature of Chinese characters, leading to poor performance in Chinese ZSSD. To address these problems, this paper proposed a Chinese ZSSD model that integrated visual glyph features with semantic understanding. The method converted the input text into glyph images with pictographic features and performed character-level segmentation. Subsequently, this model applied a semantic enhancement strategy in the image space, labeling sentiment and entity words to construct visual cues. Finally, it designed a multimodal fusion framework to align textual semantics with glyph-based visual features. Experiments on seven domains of the C-STANCE dataset demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms multiple baseline models. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of glyph information and underscore its potential in advancing Chinese ZSSD tasks.
