MG-MQE: multi-stage generation and multi-dimensional quality evaluation for automatic patent title generation

Abstract

To address the problems of redundant information, insufficient semantic coverage, and nonstandard expressions in automatic Chinese patent title generation, this study proposes a Multi-Stage Generation and Multi-Dimensional Quality Evaluation method (MG-MQE) . The proposed method first performs key sentence extraction and abstract fusion to filter and condense lengthy patent texts, enhancing the relevance and compactness of input information. It then employs a fine-tuned pre-trained model to generate multiple candidate titles. Subsequently, it introduces a multi-dimensional scoring mechanism combining a discriminative model and linguistic rules to comprehensively evaluate the candidates in terms of semantic quality and linguistic conformity, thereby selecting the optimal title. Experimental results on a self-constructed patent draft–title dataset show that MG-MQE achieves ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2, and ROUGE-L scores of 0.7784, 0.6076, and 0.7465, respectively, significantly outperforming various baseline models. The findings demonstrate that the proposed method effectively improves the quality of automatic patent title generation and provides a feasible approach for intelligent patent document drafting.
