Multi-granularity selection and discrimination framework for long-text machine reading comprehension

Abstract

To address answer truncation and insufficient cross-paragraph semantic modeling caused by input length limits of pre-trained models, this study proposes a machine reading comprehension method based on a Multi-Granularity Screening and Discrimination Framework (MGSD) . This method utilizes a two-stage strategy involving coarse-grained paragraph filtering and fine-grained block importance discrimination. In the first stage, paragraph-level filtering narrowed the candidate text scope. In the second stage, an attention-based model discriminated the importance of text blocks, while a coverage-aware constraint algorithm enhanced discrimination accuracy and coverage. Experimental results on the NewsQA dataset showed that the F1 score exceeded BERT-base and ALBERT-base by 3.9 and 6.8 percentage points, respectively, and surpassed the BERT model using only coarse-grained filtering by 1.2 percentage points. This method improves answer extraction accuracy and overall performance while maintaining global semantic consistency.
