Dual-mode collaborative DDoS attack detection and defense scheme for SDN networks

Abstract

Software-defined networking is widely deployed in critical information infrastructures. Its logically centralized control plane is vulnerable to distributed denial-of-service attacks. Existing approaches often show limited generalization under complex and time-varying traffic. They also suffer from weak interpretability and loose coupling between detection and defense. This paper proposed a dual-mode collaborative detection and defense framework for SDN networks, named DMDD. The detection module combined a Transformer and an LSTM to model global dependencies and temporal dynamics in parallel. An uncertainty-gated mechanism was introduced to trigger co-teaching consistency only for low-confidence samples. This design improved robustness and generalization in complex attack scenarios. The defense module used an explanation-to-policy mechanism based on a large language model. Detection outputs were translated into structured and constraint-aware policies under SDN invariants. Atomic batch deployment and link-level feedback were applied to construct a closed loop of detection, policy enforcement, and feedback. Experiments on the InSDN and CIC-DDoS2019 datasets achieved over 99% accuracy and F1-score. Simulation results on basic and complex Mininet topologies showed that the proposed framework effectively mitigated DDoS attacks while maintaining a low collateral damage rate.
