Dual-mode collaborative DDoS attack detection and defense scheme for SDN

Abstract

SDN is widely deployed in critical information infrastructures. Its logically centralized control plane is vulnerable to distributed denial-of-service attacks. Existing approaches often show limited generalization under complex and time-varying traffic. They also suffer from weak interpretability and loose coupling between detection and defense. This paper proposed a dual-mode collaborative detection and defense framework for SDN, named DMDD. The detection module combined a Transformer and an LSTM to model global dependencies and temporal dynamics in parallel. It introduced an uncertainty-gated mechanism to trigger co-teaching consistency only for low-confidence samples. This design improved robustness and generalization in complex attack scenarios. The defense module used an explanation-to-policy mechanism based on a large language model. It translated detection outputs into structured and constraint-aware policies under SDN invariants. Then it applied atomic batch deployment and link-level feedback to construct a closed loop of detection, policy enforcement, and feedback. Experiments on the InSDN and CIC-DDoS2019 datasets achieved over 99% accuracy and F1-score. Simulation results on basic and complex Mininet topologies show that the proposed framework effectively mitigates DDoS attacks while maintaining a low collateral damage rate.
