Collaborative edge–cloud scheduling strategy based on dynamic admission control and delay evaluation for latency-sensitive tasks

Abstract

Edge-cloud collaboration can effectively reduce the service delay, but the scheduling algorithm faces the challenge of dynamic adaptability. Traditional heuristic scheduling methods have limited adaptability, while Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has strong adaptive ability, but its overhead is large, and it is difficult to be efficiently deployed on resource-constrained edge nodes. Therefore, this paper proposes a lightweight edge-cloud collaborative deployment and task scheduling framework for delay-sensitive applications, and designs a Collaborative Scheduling strategy based on task Admission and Delay Evaluation (CSADE) . By constructing an average delay calculation model and sensing the dynamic load of the edge data center, the strategy evaluates the admission of the task request. Then, we use a lightweight heuristic scheduling strategy to complete edge-cloud scheduling to jointly optimize service delay and user QoS. Compared with the DRL method, it reduces the computational overhead, and it solves the problem of rigid rules and insufficient adaptability of heuristic algorithm. Finally, simulation and real data are used to verify the proposed method: CSADE achieved significant improvements in both average delay and QoS violation rate: the former was reduced by up to approximately 51%, and the latter decreased by up to approximately 33%, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness and engineering feasibility of the approach.
