Matrix factorization and dual-neighbor spherical interpolation driven data augmentation

Abstract

Microbial data exhibit inter-class imbalance and high sparsity. Existing resampling algorithms and generative models often suffer from high-dimensional interference and tend to generate samples that deviate from the original distribution. To address these issues, this paper proposes a data augmentation method based on matrix factorization and dual-neighbor spherical interpolation (MFSI) . The method combined three key steps. First, matrix factorization obtained latent low-dimensional representations. This reduced high-dimensional noise and revealed potential associations between samples and features. Second, a dual-neighbor spherical interpolation strategy generated minority samples on the unit sphere. This produced structurally consistent samples in the latent space. Third, an adaptive local-density filtering mechanism selected high-quality samples with reasonable distribution. Experimental results show that MFSI achieves significant improvements in Recall, G-mean, and AUC metrics over other algorithms on ten datasets. The results indicate that the method has superior classification performance for imbalanced disease-diagnosis tasks.
