Tracking student knowledge progression using structured concept and temporal learning patterns

Abstract

knowledge tracing models often struggle to simultaneously capture structured concept dependencies and temporal learning behaviors. a knowledge tracing method integrating structured concept modeling and temporal learning patterns was investigated. a concept-level knowledge graph was constructed to represent prerequisite and semantic relationships among concepts, and graph convolutional networks were used to learn structural representations. a bidirectional mamba sequence encoder was introduced to model student interaction sequences and capture long-range dependencies through a selective state-space mechanism. structural and temporal representations were fused to predict the probability of correctly answering the next question. experiments were conducted on four benchmark datasets: ASSIST2009, ASSIST2015, KDDCup2010, and Statics2011. results showed that the proposed method outperformed several representative knowledge tracing models in terms of AUC and acc. the AUC reached 0.939 on ASSIST2015. the results indicate that integrating structural concept relationships with temporal interaction patterns improves prediction accuracy and provides better interpretability for knowledge tracing tasks.
