VPA-HPA coordinated dynamic resource scheduling based on PID control and JS divergence

Abstract

To address the challenges of resource oscillation in vertical scaling and delayed response plus invalid scale-out in horizontal scaling for microservices, existing methods struggled to balance performance guarantees with resource efficiency due to a lack of coordination. Consequently, this paper proposed a dynamic resource scheduling framework named CoAutoScale to coordinate vertical and horizontal elastic scaling. The framework employed an adaptive vertical scaling strategy based on PID control to smoothly adjust container CPU and memory resources, effectively suppressing oscillations. It incorporated a hybrid horizontal scaling mechanism integrating Transformer-based load prediction with JS divergence anomaly detection, which supported proactive scale-out and prevented blind expansion. Furthermore, the system adopted a serial execution strategy that prioritized VPA and supplemented it with HPA to eliminate scaling conflicts. Experimental results demonstrate that CoAutoScale significantly outperforms existing methods in key metrics, providing efficient and stable elasticity guarantees for cloud-native microservices.
