Efficient hair simulation based on implicit-explicit of discrete elastic rod

Abstract

In the field of hair simulation, the discrete elastic rod (DER) model has become a mainstream approach for capturing the bending and twisting dynamics of hair strands. However, existing implicit integrators require solving linear systems with a bandwidth of 10, which severely limits performance and hinders real-time applications. To address this problem, this study proposes an IMplicit-EXplicit (IMEX) solver. By treating the angle–position coupling terms in the implicit system explicitly, the system is reformulated into a block pentadiagonal subsystem and a tridiagonal subsystem, which are solved using a block LU Factorization method and the Thomas algorithm, respectively. To mitigate the numerical errors introduced by explicit inversions in standard block LU methods, local Cholesky factorization is adopted as a replacement. Furthermore, to overcome the stability problem of explicit terms in IMEX, an outer-iteration stabilization strategy is introduced to maintain stability under large timestep. Experiments shows that, under realistic hair parameters, this method achieves a performance improvement of 79.26% using 500 guide hairs, while enabling stable simulation with timestep of 6 ms.
