Abstract

This paper addresses the frequency-dependent drift of polar-domain sparse support caused by beam split in wideband near-field extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems, as well as the sensitivity of bilinear pattern detection (BPD) to off-grid mismatch and local optima under discrete polar-domain dictionaries. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a spatially variant local-refinement-enhanced bilinear pattern detection (SVL-BPD) method for wideband near-field channel estimation. Different from BPD, which only performs coarse path detection over a coarse polar-domain grid by exploiting bilinear patterns, the proposed method first obtains candidate paths via BPD-based coarse detection, then performs continuous local refinement within their neighboring regions, and adaptively adjusts the local search granularity according to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) , pilot overhead, and normalized bandwidth. In addition, the proposed method introduces a residual-based candidate selection mechanism to adaptively choose among the geometrically refined result, the polar-domain sparse recovery result, and the original BPD result. Simulation results show that, compared with BPD, the proposed method reduces the normalized mean square error (NMSE) by about 1–2 dB on average under various distance and bandwidth settings, with a maximum reduction of about 3.5 dB at SNR = 15 dB, while keeping the computational complexity controllable. The proposed method effectively mitigates polar-domain sparse support drift and off-grid mismatch in wideband near-field scenarios, and improves channel estimation accuracy and robustness.
