Collaborative iterative soft-thresholding and neighborhood fine-tuning algorithm for hybrid-field channel estimation in XL-MIMO systems

Abstract

To address the dual challenges of the inherent grid mismatch effect in on-grid models and high computational complexity in off-grid models for hybrid-field channel estimation in XL-MIMO systems, this paper proposed a hybrid-field channel estimation algorithm based on iterative soft thresholding and neighborhood fine-tuning. The algorithm abandoned the greedy iterative strategies of traditional orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) and stochastic gradient pursuit (SGP) algorithms. First, the method utilized an ISTA-based global path search on a joint far- and near-field dictionary within an on-grid framework, this step significantly enhanced the robustness under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Second, the algorithm employed a low-complexity adaptive neighborhood expansion and a normalized least mean square (NLMS) fine-tuning mechanism to effectively compensate for energy leakage caused by grid mismatch. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) by approximately 2.2 dB compared with the off-grid SGP algorithm under various SNR levels while maintaining linear complexity comparable to that of the on-grid SGP algorithm.
