Ureter segmentation network fusing multi-scale features and boundary awareness

Abstract

Addressing the challenges of segmenting slender structures such as ureters in endoscopic images, which include fuzzy boundaries, weak textures, and structural discontinuities, research was conducted on integrating multi-scale feature modulation with boundary awareness. A ureter segmentation network, BAPSNet, was developed, employing a lightweight Pyramid Vision Transformer v2 (PVTv2) combined with GhostModule as the encoder. Multi-scale feature pyramid (CFPM) and feature cascade fusion (FCM) modules were incorporated to enhance semantic alignment, while a learnable boundary enhancement module (LBEM) was applied to recover fine-grained structures. In addition, a multi-threshold reverse attention module (MTRA) was used to improve boundary recognition. Experiments on the Ureter dataset achieved a Dice score of 0.9052 and a Hausdorff distance of 9.21, while on the CVC-ClinicDB dataset Dice reached 0.9273 and on the CVC-300 dataset the Hausdorff distance was 4.9926. Compared with mainstream methods, BAPSNet obtained competitive performance on most datasets and boundary-sensitive metrics, demonstrating its capability for high-precision segmentation of slender structures in endoscopic images.
