Two-stage detection method for remote access trojans in isolated state

Abstract

With the continuous evolution of Remote Access Trojans (RATs) , their threat to host security has become increasingly severe. When a RAT enters an isolated state, it generates neither malicious network traffic nor obvious malicious behaviors, making traditional detection methods that rely on network features or explicit host activities ineffective. To address this issue, the Two-Stage Detection Method for Remote Access Trojans in Isolated State (RATIS) employs a two-stage architecture that combines threshold-based filtering with a lightweight residual neural network. Experiments are conducted on an ETW log dataset constructed from 55 RAT samples and 53 benign applications. The results show that RATIS achieves an accuracy of 98.36% and a recall of 99.44% in detecting RAT in isolated state, demonstrating the feasibility of using ETW for detecting RATs in isolated state and improve the active defense capability of hosts.
