Adapce:adaptive cardinality estimation based on physical operator graph

Abstract

Cardinality estimation (CardEst) is a core module of the query optimizer, the “brain” of a database management system (DBMS) , and its accuracy directly affects query performance. To address the problem that existing CardEst strategies have difficulty adapting to complex query scenarios and may produce suboptimal plans, this paper proposes AdapCE, an adaptive framework based on physical operator graphs. AdapCE builds a dual-granularity adaptive environment at the node and subgraph levels. At the node level, AdapCE introduces a data bombing method, which injects diversified data into nodes to enhance their adaptability in different CardEst scenarios and reduce the risk of selecting inappropriate methods. At the subgraph level, AdapCE uses a subgraph matching mechanism to dynamically determine suitable CardEst results when receiving new queries. Experiments on multiple benchmarks and comparisons with CardEst methods used in different DBMSs show that AdapCE improves the estimation accuracy of the average value, the 90th percentile, and the maximum value by 9%, 5%, and 26%, respectively. The experimental results indicate that AdapCE improves the accuracy and robustness of CardEst in complex query scenarios and provides more reliable cardinality estimation support for query optimization.
