Abstract

Existing methods for phoneme segmentation rely heavily on acoustic models and ignore the inherent structures and correlation cues of speech utterances. To this end, this paper redefined the phoneme segmentation task as a joint problem of utterance covering and pattern localization. Multiple utterances each contributed partial phonemes to collectively compose the complete phoneme set of the utterance to be segmented, and the start and end boundaries of the common phonemes were localized by a similarity matrix between each utterance and the utterance to be segmented. Based on this, this paper proposed a phoneme segmentation method based on sparse coverage constraints and common pattern localization. Furthermore, key strategies including multi-source feature fusion, duration-constrained clustering, and diagonal-first traversal were introduced to jointly enhance the performance of speech representation and boundary inference. Experimental results on TIMIT, THCHS-30 and Chinese dialect dataset demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms six acoustic model-based methods including Montreal Forced Aligner across all metrics. Within a tolerance of 10 ms, the accuracy and overlap rate reach 90.88% and 90.28%, outperforming those of the optimal method by 4.90 and 5.93 percentage points, respectively. The median and standard deviation of absolute deviation are 6.54 ms and 4.68 ms, respectively. Moreover, the core computational overhead is approximately 35 ms, leading to a linear relationship between segmentation time and utterance duration.
