Abstract

The crowd bottleneck effect in large-scale events serves as an important precursor to disasters such as crowding and stampedes. However, there are few studies on computational models for crowd bottleneck effect detection. Due to the randomness of this effect and the complexity of the crowd state, the traditional computational models are not ideal for detection. To address this issue, this paper proposed a crowd bottleneck effect perceiving visual neural network (CBEPVNN) , drawing on the neural structure characteristics of the locust visual system and the risk perceiving mechanism of locust LGMD. The model simulated the visual information processing characteristics of locusts and mammals, integrated visual movement information from human activities, and employed the danger perception mechanism of LGMD neurons to establish a peak threshold mechanism. This mechanism tuned the neural network output to perceive the bottleneck effect of moving crowd in visual scenes. Experimental results demonstrated that CBEPVNN effectively perceived the moving crowd bottleneck effect in video sequences and produced a strong preference response. This work elucidates the mechanism of crowd dynamic visual information processing inspired by biological optic neural mechanisms, providing new ideas and methods for abnormal crowd activity detection and behavior analysis in intelligent video surveillance.
