Research progress on simulation and evaluation of routing protocols for flying Ad-hoc network

Abstract

With the development of UAV technology and cooperative communications, the Flying Ad-Hoc Network (FANET) has gained wide application in military, agriculture, logistics, and other fields due to its high flexibility and dynamic mobility. Owing to features such as high mobility of nodes and frequent communication link interruptions, the design and evaluation of FANET routing protocols face significant challenges. This paper examined representative protocols and their simulation-based evaluation methods to clarify the main directions, common issues and key challenges in the research of FANET routing protocols. Optimization strategies for topology awareness, link maintenance, and energy efficiency control were analyzed in detail. Additionally, Common performance evaluation metrics were summarized, and the performance of mainstream simulation tools were assessed in terms of modeling accuracy, verification efficiency, and applicability. This survey covered multiple dimensions, including protocol design, performance evaluation metrics, and simulation environments, to identify current limitations and challenges in the field and highlight potential directions for future research.
