Abstract

To address the issue of poor performance of knowledge tracing models on new exercises in open-domain exercise scenarios, this study investigated exercise semantic embedding for knowledge tracing. The model comprised two stages: the first stage utilized a fine-tuned pre-trained language model to obtain exercise semantic embedding, and the second stage employed the embeddings to complete knowledge tracing tasks while designing an answer encoder to capture students’ response information. To validate the model’s performance, this paper conducted comparative experiments on an English reading comprehension education dataset, comparing the model with state-of-the-art knowledge tracing models. Experimental results show that the model significantly outperforms comparative models in AUC and ACC, effectively improving the knowledge tracing performance for new exercises in open-domain data. The proposed method achieves effective modeling of new exercises through exercise semantic embedding and provides an innovative solution for the application of intelligent education systems in open-domain data.
